Dr.
Smith's research team created the first monoclonal T cells, which
enabled them to discover the interleukin 2 (IL2) molecule, and the
interleukin 2 receptor (IL2R). These advances led them to develop
IL2 as an immunotherapy, and as a potential adjuvant for vaccines,
to boost T cell immune responses. As well, Smith has recently
introduced a new theory of how the immune system functions,
"The Quantal Theory of Immunity" that is based on the
understanding of the IL2/IL2R system.
