Dr. Smith's research team created the first monoclonal T cells, which enabled them to first identify and characterize the interleukin 2 molecule and the interleukin 2 receptor. These advances led them to develop interleukin 2 as a therapeutic agent in low daily nontoxic doses, which they are now testing together with therapeutic
vaccines for the treatment of chronic
viral infections such as HIV and
hepatitis C.
