The New York Presbyterian Hospital Cornell Medical Center

Dr. Kendall A. Smith is the Rochelle Belfer Professor of Medicine and Immunology at Cornell University's Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He is also Senior Attending Physician and Chief of the Division of Immunology at The New York Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Smith's research team created the first monoclonal T cells, which enabled them to discover the interleukin 2 (IL2) molecule, and the interleukin 2 receptor (IL2R). These advances led them to develop IL2 as an immunotherapy, and as a potential adjuvant for vaccines, to boost T cell immune responses. As well, Smith has recently introduced a new theory of how the immune system functions, "The Quantal Theory of Immunity" that is based on the understanding of the IL2/IL2R system.
